- Vithoba, also known as vi(t)thal(a) and panduranga, is a hindu deity predomitly worshipped in the indian state of maharashtra. He is generally considered as a manifestation of the god vishnu or his avatar, krishna. Vithoba is often depicted as a dark young boy, standing arms akimbo on a brick.
- Vithoba is the focus of an essentially monotheistic, non-ritualistic bhakti-driven varkari faith of maharashtra and the haridasa faith of karnataka. Vithoba temple, pandharpur is his main temple. Vithoba legends revolve around his devotee pundalik who is credited for bringing the deity to pandharpur, and around vithobas role as a saviour to the poet-saints of the varkari faith.
- The word viththal has varied origins. It was derived from the word vishthal. Vishthal is a place far-off in a forest. It thus implies that lord viththal is a deity who resides in the forest. Viththal is worshipped on the first and pandurang on the second ekadashi (eleventh day) of the two ekadashis celebrated in a hindu lunar month.
- The vi in lord vithobas name denotes knowledge and thoba denotes shape. He is the shape of knowledge or the idol of knowledge. Another interpretation is that the word vitthala is said to be derived from the marathi word vit, meaning brick. The reason behind the brick will be explained later in this article. Ba is used to denote father in marathi.
