Varalakshmi idols importance on Varalakshmi Vratam

The month of Shraavana in Hindu Panchang holds a special place in the hearts of Indians. With the arrival of monsoons, this month is also known as the king of all months due to its numerous festivals. This garland of the festival series is made more precious by the fragrant flower of “SRI VARA LAKSHMI VRAT” or “SRI VARAMAHALAKSHMI VRAT”. Celebrated on the second Friday or the Friday that arrives before the Full Moon (Poornima) of Shravan maas.

On this auspicious Shukla paksha, A vrat ( a religious vow) is performed by the women, especially married women to please Goddess Mahalakshmi, the universal mother.

It is believed that the ever merciful Goddess of Prosperity, Lakshmi herself instructed and explained the method of this vrat to her devotee Charumathi in ancient times. Even today the Vara Lakshmi Vrat is incomplete without the recitation of the story of Charumathi, Cheeladevi, and Syamalamba. All these saubhagyavati women attained peace and prosperity by observing this holy vrat.

The most unique and important custom of this special festival is the keeping of VARALAKSHMI IDOL. Sanatana Dharma firmly believes in the idol worship of the nirakara Paramatma ( the formless Supreme soul). Though it seems like a paradox, it is in fact an ingenious way to reach spiritual goals. The ultimate aim of all our religious practices is to take mankind towards divinity. The common man due to karma phala struck in this materialistic life finds it difficult or absurd to even grasp the concept of formless one let alone meditate on it. For this, the benevolent supreme soul who is believed to be none other than Sri Narayan with his eternal consort Sri Mahalakshmi took materialistic forms. This Festival is one such ritual where the VARALAKSHMI ( Vara- bestower of boons) form of the goddess is worshipped who is believed to grant all kinds of prosperity.

The Idol of varalakshmi is not just a doll, but with Vedic hymns, the Lakshmi seated in all our hearts herself is invoked and established in the idol. The idol is considered as Varalakshmi and all kinds of pooja are done to her. Vara Lakshmi, revered on this day, is said to be the amalgamation of Ashta Lakshmis( eight manifestations of Lakshmi). It is commonly misinterpreted that Lakshmi is only the goddess of monetary gain where Lakshmi is the Deity of Prosperity of all kinds. The various boons bestowed by ashta Lakshmi include Spiritual progress, Monetary gain, Agricultural abundance, Luxuries and royalty, Fertility and children, Victory and success, Courage and valor, Knowledge. All these can be attained by the proper worship of Vara Lakshmi. Vara Lakshmi is offered puja like how a very special guest is given all kinds of honors. Among many other upacharas, Harivallabha (beloved of Mahavishnu) is worshipped with Asana, Padya, Arghya, Achamana, Madhuparka, Abhishekha, Vastra, Mangalasutra, Upaveeha, Abharana, Gandha, Saubhagya Dravya, Akshatha, and Pushpa.
