Le guitariste (guitar player) (1910)- here, everything is so abstract that it is very difficult to see any guitarist at all. If you look very carefully, you can just about make out an image of a man, and the slightest suggestion of a guitar. The first stage of picassos cubism is known as analytical cubism. The colour scheme for this style also made it difficult to see the pictures. It was limited, largely to blacks, browns and dark greens. This pyramidal composition depicts a man clutching a musical instrument, of which only the most basic elements can be discerned, fanning out from the base. The mans body is constructed using only a few straight and curved lines, and colour is reduced to a wide variety of ochres and greys, allowing picasso to generate stunning tonal contrasts and pictorial effects using a neo-impressionist approach. The great fragmentation of form, on the other hand, invites an abstract rather than figurative interpretation. Before the age of 50, the spanish born artist had become the most well-known name in modern art, with the most distinct style and eye for artistic creation. There had been no other artists, prior to picasso, who had such an impact on the art world, or had a mass following of fans and critics alike, as he did.
