How To Use Clay balls, also called hydroton, can be used in hydroponic gardening and indoor gardening to help the roots of plants get enough air and water. Here's a basic guide to using clay balls to take care of plants: Rinse the clay balls well to get rid of any dust or other small pieces. Put a layer of clay balls in the bottom of the container to make sure it drains well. On top of the clay balls, add a layer of nutrient-rich growing medium, such as soil, coconut coir, or rockwool.
